Mission
Statement of Occupy JP
Our mission is to create a democratic society, run for the
needs of all and not for the profits of the 1% who control the
political system.
Background:
Income
and wealth inequality have reached unconscionable
levels. A recent Congressional Budget Office report noted that
the richest 400 people in the U.S. now control more wealth than the
bottom 50% of households and that in the last two decades incomes for
the top 1% have tripled while the incomes for everyone else have
flatlined. Tax rates for the rich have fallen
dramatically while attacks on social programs such as Social Security,
Medicare, and Medicaid continue. Wall Street has been continually
bailed out while foreclosures continue unabated.
Occupy JP is a group from JP and surrounding neighborhoods
working on issues of fairness and social justice. Members of the
group share the conviction that
the economic system should be transformed so that wealth, income, and
power are more fairly distributed, that programs
promoting education, health, and retirement for the 99% and especially
for the poor and disadvantaged should be preserved and expanded, and
that the tax system should be reformed so that everyone, including the
rich, pay their fair share.
